If you're planning a wedding in Dublin, there's a good chance you've already checked the weather forecast at least a dozen times.

One of the most common questions I get from couples is:

"What happens if it rains on our wedding day?"

The short answer is simple: we make the most of it. After photographing weddings and family sessions across Dublin for years, I can honestly say that some of my favourite images have been taken on cloudy days, misty mornings and even in the rain.

The Good News About Irish Weather

The weather in Ireland changes quickly.

I've had wedding days where heavy rain was forecast all morning, only for the clouds to clear just in time for portraits. I've also had days that looked perfect on the forecast and surprised us with a shower or two.

The reality is that trying to predict Irish weather days in advance is often impossible.

Cloudy Days Are Actually Great For Photos

Most people imagine bright sunshine is the perfect weather for wedding photos.

As photographers, we often prefer cloud cover.

Cloudy skies create soft, flattering light that helps avoid harsh shadows, squinting and bright patches of sunlight. It allows us to focus on genuine moments rather than constantly searching for shade.

We Don't Need Hours Outside

Many couples worry that rain means there won't be any wedding photos.

In reality, most portrait sessions only require short pockets of time.

Even if there is rain throughout the day, we can often step outside for five or ten minutes between showers and create beautiful images without keeping you away from your guests for long.

Dublin Has Plenty Of Beautiful Sheltered Locations. One of the advantages of getting married in Dublin is that there are beautiful backdrops almost everywhere.

Historic doorways, covered walkways, elegant hotel entrances and city architecture can all provide stunning locations while keeping everyone dry.

Sometimes these locations create even more interesting photographs than a wide open outdoor space.

A simple umbrella can add character and atmosphere to your photographs.

Clear umbrellas work particularly well because they allow light through while keeping you dry. They can also create some lovely romantic moments that feel very natural and authentic.

The Most Important Thing To Remember

Years from now, you won't remember whether it rained at 2pm. You'll remember how you felt.

You'll remember the people who were there, the laughter, the hugs and the excitement of finally being married.

The best wedding photographs aren't about perfect weather. They're about capturing those moments and preserving them for years to come.

So if the forecast isn't looking ideal, try not to worry.
